Overfire Air Systems
Foster Wheeler has extensive experience with overfire air (OFA) systems on tangential boilers, arch and wall fired furnaces. Hundreds of coal fired boilers, and many firing oil and gas, have been either designed with a Foster Wheeler OFA system or were retrofitted later by Foster Wheeler.
Overfire is one of the single most cost effective ways to reduce NOx in an uncontrolled furnace. It is applicable to any firing system and all fossil fuels. Overfire Air is commonly used to compliment NOx reductions beyond those provided by Low NOx Burners alone.

Overfire air systems are designed and sized to deliver the appropriate amount of total combustion air required to achieve NOx and combustion efficiency goals, with the amount depending on the unit, firing system and coals being fired. Special attention is paid to resizing the burners, locating the OFA ports, their quantity and size, along with assuring correct sizing of OFA ducts to achieve optimal NOx and CO performance.
|
- Optimum OFA penetration is essential. Early systems failed to generate the velocity needed for correct jet penetration resulting in poor burner performance and insignificant reductions in NOx.
- Correct mixing is a must. OFA retrofits often neglect their effect on the burners. When secondary air is diverted to OFA nozzles burner velocities necessary for Low NOx combustion are impaired. Foster Wheeler corrects this problem with proprietary Enhanced Burner Mixers (EBM).
- Protection of wall surfaces from corrosion must be considered when firing certain coals with deeper staged OFA systems. For these applications Foster Wheeler applies their Lower Furnace Air Ports (LFAP) to introduce a layer of protection air along the side waterwall. These ports increase the oxygen content of the flue gas near the wall to reduce CO and H2S concentrations. Placement, air flow and velocity through these ports are determined through computer modeling.
- Wall coatings and overlays are available as options to further provide long term effective wall wastage protection in boilers.
