Process Engineering

The Process Engineering department has over 300 employees and as such is the largest of its kind in the UK. The strength of the department is based on the quality of people that we attract either via direct graduate entry or as part of the ongoing recruitment
process. Process Engineers are involved in all stages of project development from the initial concept, plant definition to plant commissioning and operation.

Chemical Engineering graduates join our excellent training program, geared towards achieving Corporate Membership of the Institute of Chemical Engineers. The training program provides an environment for you to develop both your technical and leadership potential.

Engineering

The Engineering department is a large part of FW and employs around 1000 permanent staff. The department is responsible for developing Process Engineering specifications to sufficient detail for our Procurement and Construction departments to purchase and build the Process Plant. In addition to equipment specification the department is responsible for specifying the infrastructure needed for large and complex projects and our Project Engineering group take a key role in meeting our client's objectives and managing the delivery of our projects. There are excellent training opportunities available for Mechanical Engineers (Vessels, Heat Exchangers, Piping, Rotating Equipment, Materials and Technology Groups), Project Engineers, Electrical and Instrumentation Engineers and Civil Engineers. All our training programs are accredited by the appropriate professional institution.

Procurement/Quantity Surveying

Total Procurement spend for 2006 exceeded £1,250 million and covered a full range of equipment and commodity materials as well as construction and technical services. The scope of services provided by the Procurement Department includes Purchasing, Materials Control, Shipping and Logistics, Construction Contracts and Quantity Surveying, Inspection and Expediting Services. The Central Purchasing Group is responsible for procurement of all FWEL's indirect (Facilities/ICT) equipment and services to support our business needs.

The Procurement Department is closely aligned to our Project Task Forces as well as the Technical (Engineering & Construction) Groups to ensure that all purchased and manufactured items are delivered to specification and on time; this being the 'goal' for all our Materials Management which underpins any EPC (Engineering Procurement Construction) project execution.

The Department currently employs around 400 personnel from a variety of different professional affiliations, a large proportion of whom are assigned to construction sites and other office locations around the world. In September, we will welcome 9 more graduates onto the Company's formal training programme which supports staff in gaining an appropriate professional qualification and, typically, membership of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) or, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

Project & Document Control

Project Control runs all aspects of project cost and planning - budgeting, forecasting, scheduling, monitoring and controlling - on all significant projects - working individually or on Task Forces - liaising with all engineering, technical and management disciplines - providing direct assistance and advice to Project Managers and Site Construction Managers - we have specialist cost engineers and planning engineers, rising from junior level to Project Control Managers (in charge of all project control functions on a wide range of projects, some over a billion pounds in capital value).

Estimating

Our estimating group is one of the largest of its type in Europe and generates over one hundred capital cost estimates each year for projects across Foster Wheelers range of business units. The scale of each estimate can range in value from tens of millions to billions of dollars. Our work requires involvement throughout the project lifecycle, including bidding for new work to close out of contracts, offering a unique position to see a project from conception to completion. There is tremendous variety in the type of work which can include small feasibility studies lasting a few months to major engineering and construction projects lasting several years. Our estimators come from a wide range of backgrounds, with some employees joining from university and also many people transferring internally from other departments.

Construction

Construction Department is part of the project operations organisation and supports the project management of projects from proposals through to execution. It is primarily responsible for the implementation of projects in the field i.e. construction in accordance with safe working practises, specifications, project schedule and budget. Additionally, Construction supports Business Development in selling Foster Wheeler Energy Limited to prospective clients and in support of prequalification for participation in projects, as required. The Construction portion of any typical project accounts for up to 40% of the value of a project and typically 70% of the project duration with considerable overlapping with Engineering and Procurement.
